FEMA.gov Website Sitemap

Exploring a bit, I realized that the official FEMA.gov website is huge, and has so many branches and leafs, that it is neigh impossible to fully grasp even its main sections. Its just too big!

FEMA nicely offers a (seemingly endless ) sitemap of FEMA.gov, but it is a static list of titles, and so a bit tough to search, explore, or understand the content.

So, I’ve created a sitemap (as of 26 September 2024 anyway) for their site that:

  • allows contracting and expanding branches
  • displays page title, actual URL 🔗 name, and their page summary
  • searching 🔍 and filtering may be offered in the future

Let us know if this is of use to you.

What’s a SiteMap?

As noted here:

👉 “Technically, a sitemap is a plain text file (albeit with a special format) that lists pages in your website that you want search engines to crawl and add to their results database.

“A sitemap can also be used to quickly outline your (current or planned) website. Being abstract, it is easy to move or rearrange a website’s structure for discussion purposes. It can be represented as a mindmap, but for our purposes a basic outline of pages will suffice. Each line of the outline could be a main menu heading, a section, a page, or even a portion of a page.

The FEMA site is mammoth, and like eating an elephant its best to proceed a bit at a time. Navigation options:

  • This takes some time to download & initialize
  • Drag in the background area to move the map around the screen
  • Zoom using the controls at the upper right, or using a scroll mouse wheel with the CTRL key held
  • Click on the arrow icon at the upper right of each block to go to that page

The top-level pages can be expressed as:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Other Languages (French, …)
